Secure Your Crypto with Signer by Tonkeeper

Signer by Tonkeeper — two security modes for TON private key protection

A Safe and Convenient Solution for Tonkeeper Users

Crypto losses from hacks remain a serious problem. According to FBI data, crypto users lost $5.6 billion to fraud and hacking in 2023 alone — with phishing targeting online-stored private keys as the most common attack vector. The core vulnerability is straightforward: when your private keys live on an internet-connected device, they are exposed to anyone who can access that device remotely.

Signer is Tonkeeper's answer to this problem.

What is Signer?

Signer is a free app built by the Tonkeeper team whose sole function is transaction signing. In a standard non-custodial wallet, your private keys and your transaction interface live in the same app. Signer separates them: the Tonkeeper app handles your wallet interface and transaction initiation, while Signer holds the keys and handles signing. The two apps communicate through QR codes — your keys never need to travel across a network connection.

Two Modes for Different Security Needs

Convenience Mode pairs Signer with Tonkeeper on the same device. When you initiate a transaction in Tonkeeper, you are automatically redirected to Signer to approve it. Your keys are not stored in Tonkeeper itself — they live only in Signer. This adds a meaningful security layer over a standard single-app setup, because compromising the Tonkeeper app alone is not sufficient to move your funds.

Maximum Security Mode takes key isolation further. Install Signer on a separate phone, tablet, or device that you then disconnect from the internet permanently. When you make a transaction on your main Tonkeeper device, a QR code is generated. You scan it with the offline Signer device, which signs the transaction and generates a response QR code that your online device broadcasts to the network. Your private keys never touch the internet. The only way to steal them is physical access to the offline device.

This achieves hardware-wallet-level security without purchasing dedicated hardware. Any old phone that still powers on and runs the Signer app is sufficient.

Who Should Use Signer?

Signer is useful for any TON holder, but particularly valuable for:

  • Users with significant holdings who want key isolation without investing in hardware wallets
  • Users who want a larger savings wallet protected by Maximum Security Mode while keeping a smaller everyday Tonkeeper wallet for routine transactions
  • Anyone whose threat model includes phishing or remote device compromise

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Signer alongside my existing Tonkeeper wallet?

Yes. Signer works alongside your existing Tonkeeper setup. You can migrate to Signer without creating a new wallet — just pair the apps using the setup flow in Signer. Your existing wallet address and history remain unchanged.

What happens if the offline Signer device is lost or damaged?

Your funds are recoverable as long as you have backed up the seed phrase that Signer generated when you created the wallet. If the offline device fails, you can restore the wallet on a new device using your seed phrase. This is why backing up your seed phrase in a secure physical location is essential — it is the ultimate recovery mechanism regardless of what happens to the device.
